Organizational Behavior

     Work still In Process

80/20 Rule

20% of a group will do 80% of the work.
This will continue until:

a) The 80% gets burned out and quits,

     OR

b) The 20% realize they didn’t participate in the work or decision making and now complain about what the 20% did. This creates turmoil in the group.

Meeting Size

The best meetings have no more than 6 participants. This allows everyone to speak their feelings and ideas. This leads to consensus more easily than larger groups.

Gaining Consensus

Consensus is the best decisions because everyone will support it.

Learn to get consensus, it’s worth the extra time in reaching it.

You will have consensus when you look each one in the face and ask if they support a decision.

Changing Management Style

A new business is run by a single leader.

As the business grows, it should move towards two co-leaders, with different skills and areas of concern. This is the beginning of delegation. Example: Office leader and Crew Supervisor.

Later as the business blossoms, more leaders are required, such as Accounting, Purchasing, Sales, etc. Management must adopt to new forms of communications within the business.

Consider frequent meetings where each dept. tells what they are doing right and wrong, what they expect in the future (time crunches, projects, etc.)  When that person is finished they are fair game for discussion of problems they did not confess to or are now aware of.

This keeps communications open and resolves problems.
